She holds a PhD in Education\, in which she conducted inclusive research with people with intellectual disability\, and a Master’s in Māori and Pacific Development. She works as an Inclusion Advisor for IHC\, an organisation that advocates for the rights of autistic people and people with intellectual disability.\nDr Nicolina Newcombe\nInclusion Advisor\, IHC New Zealand Incorporated\nTalk title: “The impact of takiwātanga on autistic pride in Aotearoa New Zealand”\nThis talk will share insights from her research into takiwātanga – a te reo Māori word meaning “in his/her/their own time and space” – and how this concept shapes autistic pride in Aotearoa New Zealand. Rooted in Māori worldviews that embrace difference as a natural part of whakapapa (genealogy)\, takiwātanga presents a powerful counter-narrative to deficit-based views of autism.
