✨ What to Expect
🌟 Stories of Celebration
We’ll begin with a “Stories of Celebration” session – a chance for anyone who feels comfortable to briefly share a personal story, reflection, or achievement related to neurodiversity. These can be big or small – from proud moments and growth experiences to insights or gratitude. This is an informal, supportive moment to honour and uplift our diverse voices and experiences.
🥪 Community Lunch
We’ll enjoy a relaxed and friendly lunch together – a broodje and drink are included in your ticket price. This is a great chance to meet others, continue conversations, and share in the spirit of community.
🎤 Presentation & Mini Workshop
This year we are excited to welcome a guest speaker from the other side of the world to share her insights.
Dr Nicolina Newcombe is a late-diagnosed autistic person from Aotearoa New Zealand. She holds a PhD in Education, in which she conducted inclusive research with people with intellectual disability, and a Master’s in Māori and Pacific Development. She works as an Inclusion Advisor for IHC, an organisation that advocates for the rights of autistic people and people with intellectual disability.
Dr Nicolina Newcombe
Inclusion Advisor, IHC New Zealand Incorporated
Talk title: “The impact of takiwātanga on autistic pride in Aotearoa New Zealand”
This talk will share insights from her research into takiwātanga – a te reo Māori word meaning “in his/her/their own time and space” – and how this concept shapes autistic pride in Aotearoa New Zealand. Rooted in Māori worldviews that embrace difference as a natural part of whakapapa (genealogy), takiwātanga presents a powerful counter-narrative to deficit-based views of autism. Nicolina will offer her perspective as a Pākehā (non-Māori) navigating bicultural inclusion.
